B08- Brands, Marketing, and Advertising with Social Media

The success and failures of different brands and companies with the use of social media is more prominent now than ever. I think one of the biggest mis-use of social media companies when using advertisements is when companies begin to over use AI for their advertisements. Multiple companies have been utilizing the growing and advancing AI but is often critiqued for being lazy and cutting corners. Disney the popular animation company has even been under fire last thanksgiving for posting a completely AI made image of the popular characters at the thanksgiving dinner table. Viewers were quick to spot issues in the image leading to outrage from fans, as animation is the very foundation that started the company. Other brands like Coca-Cola and Heinz have also been seen using AI for their newer advertisements.

Companies who have been successful in using social media are companies that understand the types of humor for the age group they are marketing towards. Duolingo is a prime example of this, the app is designed to help you learn foreign languages, however the Duolingo social media presence has made the Duolingo owl a household name for Gen Z consumers. The companies TikTok focuses o current trends and remakes them with their mascot, as well as participating in roast culture both on their own app and social media, similarly to the popular Wendy's Twitter account. The company will post jokes and funny videos that create for traffic on the video, thus creating more revenue.

Another example of higher ups making decisions that do not flush out is the new Starbucks rule of requiring baristas to write fun notes on every single cup, the goal was to get free advertising from consumers who would take pictures of their cute thought out sayings on their cups. However, baristas make hundreds of drinks a shift and during rush hour it is near impossible for workers to come up with creative sayings while still keeping up with the flow of business. Now consumers are not posting their cups and workers are more drained. If companies want to be successful in advertising on social media, they need to be aware of the humor and interests of the demographic they aspire to market towards. Understanding what the consumer actually wants to see.
