B10- Social Media Access and Equity
Having limited access to social media limits ones ability to learn new information and ideas as quickly as the other people around them. While many of us may not even consider social media and internet access as a luxury but many people are unable to afford access or are unable to use social media correctly. Having a lack of access to media means that many people will not be able to see and try new and developing workouts. With so many different aspiring fitness influencers constantly posting content there are exercises for everyone, low impact, beginner, intermediate, dance workouts, and so much more. Those that do not have access are left with limited options for learning and trying new workouts. They will have to rely on their own knowledge or take advice from people around them, a much smaller circle than being able to do a search on TikTok where you are able to see the form of the influencer when trying it out.
A lack of access to social media in this day and age can also affect peoples ability to relate to commonalities and "fit-in" many people, students especially make their connections off of what they have in common, discussing their favorite shows, movies, etc. The increase in meme culture has spread and has taken over the humor in schools. I can even remember being younger and a saying from a popular vine started to become the nest big joke, it took me much longer than everyone to understand what the joke meant and made me an outcast in the moment because I did not have the access to social media at the time. As social media becomes more and more present in the day to day world it is important to also consider how accessible internet and media are for all people and what that could mean for real life social interactions.
