B12- Future of Social Media

I think as a society we are constantly changing trends and what is the most desirable look or body. With the current rise in celebrities and influencers using Ozempic and other things for drastic weight loss that we will continue to see an increase of fitness influencer attempting to get as thin as possible. A few years ago everyone wanted the Kim Kardashian body, with large implants and fillers being all of the rage and taking over fashion and fitness influencers. Different workouts to get a small waist and huge butt flooded YouTube and Instagram to try to follow the current trends. Now we have seen celebrities and influencers get their implants removed and filler dissolved and begin to look smaller. Ariana Grande in 2016 was using filler, spray tans, and Botox. She has recently been under scrutiny as people have become concerned with her dramatic weight loss.     Social Media affects what we deem is desirable. When social media shows us how being slim is...

B11- Avoiding Social Media Pitfalls

With the internet being so engrained in our society and public, everything we post and create will be able to be tracked down to us. This is expedited especially for celebrities and influencers who have a plethora of haters and paparazzi who will search for anything to tarnish their image. Cancel culture has made it so something you have posted over eight years ago can put your entire career to a screeching hault. Countless times have old tweets from ascertain celebrity come out where they have to then damage control in order to save their image. Not only do the celebrity or influencer try to save their image by apologizing or taking accountability for their actions, companies will cut ties with celebrities in controversy in an effort to protect their overall revenue. An example of this is with popular youtuber PewDiePie. PewDiePie, also known as Felix was the highest paid Youtuber in 2017 when a video of him using the N-word surfaced with later being accused of anti...

B10- Social Media Access and Equity

Having limited access to social media limits ones ability to learn new information and ideas as quickly as the other people around them. While many of us may not even consider social media and internet access as a luxury but many people are unable to afford access or are unable to use social media correctly. Having a lack of access to media means that many people will not be able to see and try new and developing workouts. With so many different aspiring fitness influencers constantly posting content there are exercises for everyone, low impact, beginner, intermediate, dance workouts, and so much more. Those that do not have access are left with limited options for learning and trying new workouts. They will have to rely on their own knowledge or take advice from people around them, a much smaller circle than being able to do a search on TikTok where you are able to see the form of the influencer when trying it out.      A lack of access to social media in this day ...

B09- Social Media and Education

Having access to all kinds of information can be helpful and detrimental to consumers who do not use contextual thinking. Often consumers will believe things they read on social media even when the sources providing the information can be riddled with flaws. Aspiring influencers will put out their tips and viewers will immediately follow them without considering the differences in how their bodies will respond to these actions. An example I can think of is posts I have seen floating around social media for years, "If you are hungry eat an apple, if an apple doesn't sound good maybe you aren't hungry." Some people will read this and immediately follow it which can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food, for some people if an apple does not sound appealing it may be because your body is needing a different nutrient besides an apple.     Social media has been leading the game as far as producing new fad diets, recipes, and workouts that are the "best" jus...

B08- Brands, Marketing, and Advertising with Social Media

Image
The success and failures of different brands and companies with the use of social media is more prominent now than ever. I think one of the biggest mis-use of social media companies when using advertisements is when companies begin to over use AI for their advertisements. Multiple companies have been utilizing the growing and advancing AI but is often critiqued for being lazy and cutting corners. Disney the popular animation company has even been under fire last thanksgiving for posting a completely AI made image of the popular characters at the thanksgiving dinner table. Viewers were quick to spot issues in the image leading to outrage from fans, as animation is the very foundation that started the company. Other brands like Coca-Cola and Heinz have also been seen using AI for their newer advertisements.     Companies who have been successful in using social media are companies that understand the types of humor for the age group they are marketing towards. Duolingo is ...

B07- Business and Social Media

Businesses have taken part in the wide social media takeover in our generation. Businesses have seen how social media has taken over how we interact with one another, connecting with a wide audience of people is easier now than ever before. One of the biggest ways I have seen companies take a step into social media is through humor. I feel this started a few years ago when the popular fast food company Wendy's had their twitter account begin to roast not only their consumers but even other companies.      Wendy's was one of the first companies to use social media and poke fun at their consumers, this increased their audience as social media users would make these roasts go viral and start engaging with the company account for a chance to be roasted by the company. Other companies started to follow suit when seeing the success of the Wendy's account with other fast food and other companies joining in on the roasting fun, roasting other companies as well...

B06- Politics and Social Media

Influences are all around us. While politics does not directly relate to my topic, influence does. Influence is one of the bases of how social media gains it's traction. We are being influenced all the time even when we are unaware of it, when social media content creators post a ranking of the 5 different Trader Joes pre-made wraps, if the creator you watch dislikes one and praises another, you are most likely to try the one they praise even though everyone's tastes are different.      This week I wanted to put influence of products to the test. Paigeeatsgood on TikTok is known for her rankings of Trader Joes meals. I decided to try all of the 5 foods in one of her food reviews to see how my opinions line up with hers. Often when watching these food rankings we look at what is the best and if I was just casually grocery shopping I would tend to grab the one she ranked the highest. I decided to buy each of the five frozen appetizers and decided to see how my ranking...
